Low-Hanging Wires Reported Over Roadway

Town of Clayton Fire responded to a utility emergency on Factory Street in Depauville on Tuesday afternoon after low-hanging wires were reported over the roadway near the intersection with Povo Road. The incident began at 4:18 p.m. and was classified as a major utility hazard, prompting fire units to respond and assess the danger to traffic and nearby utility lines.

Early updates from the scene indicated the wire in the roadway appeared to be a cable line, but it was tangled with a home’s electric service line. A chief officer arrived within minutes and reported that a line was down across the road and wrapped in overhead power lines serving a residence. Based on that assessment, a National Grid supervisor was requested, while responders initially believed a full line crew might not be needed. National Grid and Spectrum were both notified as the situation developed.

As crews worked the scene, Clayton command rerouted incoming units by way of Route 12 and Lowell Road because of access issues near Long Road. Fire personnel also coordinated traffic control, ultimately keeping units positioned on Whistle Owl Road during the operation. At 5:30 p.m., responders reported the wires had been secured, the roadway could be reopened, and units were cleared from the scene after about 71 minutes.
